Do 217E-4 serial number 5478 crashed in the North Sea 10/8 1942.


The aircraft belonged to II./ KG 40 and was coded F8+EC.
T/o Soesterberg. Op: Feindflug.


The Do 217E-4 crashed in the North Sea and was a 100% loss.

The body of Pilot Oberfeldwebel Helmut Metz was found on the Danish West Coast on 8/10 and was laid to rest in Fovrfelt cemetery in Esbjerg on 13/10 1942.

Navigator Oberfeldwebel Paul Olbrich was found washed ashore near Bjerghuse on 9/10 and was laid to rest in Lemvig cemetery on 10/10 1942 with the German field priest officiating at the graveside ceremony.

Engineer Unteroffizier Willi Schmiedla has no known grave while the body of Wop Unteroffizier Heinz Schmidt was found on the Danish West Coast on 11/10 and was laid to rest in Fovrfelt cemetery in Esbjerg on 16/10 1942.
