Lancaster X KB709 crashed in the sea of Kattegat 6 miles off the island of Anholt 30/8 1944.


The aircraft belonged to RCAF (RAF) 428 Sqn. Bomber Command and was coded NA-G.
T/o 21:19 Middleton St. George. OP: Stettin.


It is believed that this is the aircraft that was seen to crash in to the sea of Kattegat at 01:00 hours 6 miles southwest of the island of Anholt.

The body of Navigator F/O Llewellyn H.C. Gardiner was found washed ashore in Pakhusbugten bay on the island of Anholt on 9/9 1944. He was buried at Anholt cemetery on the same day by the German Wehrmacht.
 
Air Bomber WT/O John B. Gravelet – Chapman was washed ashore in Pakhusbugten Bay, Anholt on 11/9 1944 and was buried at Anholt cemetery by the German Wehrmacht on the same day.
 
On 6/11 1944 was found the body of Flt. Engr. Sgt James McFarlane RAF at Vesterstrand beach, Anholt. He was buried at Anholt cemetery on the same day by the German Wehrmacht.
 
The bodies of Wop/Air Gnr. F/O Thomas Baillie, Air Gnr. F/Sgt Harold Gordon RAF and Air Gnr. Sgt Douglas A.G. Sparkes was found washed ashore on the Swedish west coast and today rest in Falkenberg cemetery, Sweden.

Pilot F/O Leonard S. Plunkett has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
