Lancaster I ED309 crashed in the sea 8/2-1943.
The aircraft belonged to RAF 44 Sqn. Bomber Command and was coded KM-S.
T/O Waddington. OP: Lorient.
The aircraft is presumed to have crashed in the sea on the night of 7/8 February
when it participated in attack on Lorient on the south side of Bretagne France.
On Monday 8 February 1943 a body was found washed ashore in Beach area no. 19
Knopper near Harboøre. It appeared to have been in the sea for quite a long time
and was in a bad condition from decomposition and missing both head and legs. It
was dressed in blue marine trousers and a gray pullover. The trousers were
market: J.M. Miller.
The body was laid to rest in Lemvig cemetery on February 9. 1943.
After the war the body was identified by the British armed forces as being that
of Pilot F/O John W. Millar RCAF who was the pilot of ED309.
The author of this home page find it very unlikely indeed that it actually was
the body of John W. Millar due to the fact that a body takes quite a while to
reach the state this was found to be in.
I find it much more likely that it was the body of Able Seaman John Martin
Miller, C/JX 339365 of S.S.Avenwood, Royal Navy who died on 12/12-1942 and is
commemorated on The Chatham Naval Memorial.
Flt. Engr. Sgt Robert W. Drury RCAF, Navigator F/S Kenneth M. Perkins RCAF, Air
Bomber Sgt Leslie H. Curtis, W/Op Sgt Harry G. Black RCAF, Air Gnr. Sgt William
W. Scrimgeour and Air Gnr. Sgt Alfred L. Bond of Lancaster ED309 have no known
graves and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
